Glaucoma

This disease is painless as vision decreases slowly; often it is detected very late. Headache, eye ache or temporary deterioration of the eyesight can be signs of the disease.

An eye specialist can make a diagnosis by measuring the intraocular pressure and checking the ocular fundus and the visual field. At an early stage glaucoma can be treated with eye drops and if necessary with surgery to reduce the intraocular pressure.

If glaucoma are not treated, irreversible visual loss or even blindness is the consequence. A glaucoma attack (appearance of colorful circles around light, very red and painful eyes combined with headache, sudden and severe nausea) is a medical emergency, an eye specialist or eye hospital must be seen immediately.
